Lynn - 2nd Alarm +, Brookline Street 1/14/08

Shortly before 6 pm Lynn Engine 5 responded to a report of smoke in the area of Sanderson ave. Upon arrival Engine 5 found heavy found heavy smoke in the area and requested the box be struck and the assignment be filled out bringing 2 more Engines, 1 Ladder, the District Chief and Safety Officer. Upon further investigation Engine 5 found the origin of the smoke to be the vacant J.J. Nissen Bakery on Brookline st. This was a large commercial bakery which had been vacant and in a state of disrepair for quite some time.

The fire already had a significant head start and and was burning heavily in the rear of the building, and the roof had already begun to collapse. a working fire was declared bringing an additional ladder and an Atlantic ALS unit to the scene to stand by. Ladder 1 set up a ladder pipe on the delta side of the building, while Tower Ladder 4 set up it's pipe on the bravo side of the building. Engine 5 set up a deck gun on Brookline st. to protect the exposure on the bravo side which was a 1 1/2 story woodframe house which was separated from the factory by only an alley. A 2nd alarm was struck bringing 3 more Engines and an extra Ladder over the 2nd alarm. An additional engine was also later called to the fire to relay pump to another engine. A total of 3 ladder pipes, 2 deck guns, and multiple handlines operated at this fire. The fire burned for nearly 3 hours before being brought under control, and at the height of the fire the MBTA commuter rail line that runs along the rear of the building had to be shut down due to poor visibility from the heavy smoke from the fire. Crews remained on scene well into the night overhauling and cooling hot spots.
